This trip was just a 3 day trip through Jaegers with my girlfriend.
Area: Kristiansand – Jaegersberg
Distance: around 20km
Task: Living outside, finding water, building a field toilet, building shelters, card and compass work, fire making
Equipment: like ever, food, rope, knive, kitchen, etc.
I started at Spicheren and moved into jaegers with my girlfriend, as soon as possible we went offpiste to use the card and the compass.
Bearing with compass:
We have been on a hill and want to find our exact position on the card.
For the bearing of your position you should have a card, and a compass is also not bad to have.
First step: go to a markable point close to you, a river, a cliff, a huge rock, a lake,…best thing is (in my opinion) to climb on the top of mountain close to you.
Second step: on the top of the mountain you should try to find other markable points around you and try to find this points on the card. Big mountains ore Lakes/river are perfect for it. Also swamps ore totaly dry areas are perfect.
Third step: you need to find the north and place youre map into the direction of north. Now you use youre compass and and point with the arrow on it ore with a mirrow. Turn the adjustable knob until the N is on the needle of your compass. Now you lay it onto the map, with the N to the north of your map. The edge of your compass should lay at the markable point on your map. Use a pencil and make a straight line on the edge. Starting at the markable point and ending somewhere on the map.
Fourth step:
okay, do the step before again with another markable point. Now you have somewhere on your map a cross between the two lines. Somewhere around there you should be.
But, if you want to be shure, you can use a third point. If you use three points you will get a triangle between three lines. There you should be. This is really precise.
The first night we spend on a mountain in a tarp. For making it more comfortable, we used some tan needles to place them under our sleeping mat to have it more cozy.
On the second day we went out very late cause different reasons. One was a very long breakfast in the sun. So we decided to make just a day trip and improving our outdoor skills.
Camp:
We build a small camp with our tarp and a tree a few meters away for our “basic necessaries”. On day two we collect some bushes and some brambres to make a circle around the tarp. Something like a little thieve ore animal protection for our food. I know, it’s not a high chance to meet a wolf ore a bear in south norway. But I read about it and now I tested it out. And it was looking good 🙂
Early in the morning of day 3 we pack our stuff and leave. We made some small tour in a circle to go back to the entrace of Jaegers. We made some really long lunch on a beautiful small lake and so it was getting dark soon. We decided to stay the afternoon on the lake and walk back in the night with our headtorch. But before we study the map if this trip is able to do in the night. Answer YES. Not very steep area, a big markable lake and enough food left for staying another night…just in case of realy bad orientation skills.
Nightwalk:
This was a good experience. It’s not easy to follow small hiking tracks during the night. Sometimes they just dissapere in your head-torch light. And it’s not easy to find markable lights. At least you should be quiet and carefuly, cause if not it could be that a troll will catch you. After maybe 3 hours we arrived back at my dorm. It was a bit scary to be alone in the forrest during the night. I mean you are not alone…thousand eyes are watching you and you don’t see them. Specialy the trolls. The are quick and shy. But don’t make them angry ore scare them. Then they will be the last thing you see on earth. Trolls are not very smart and only nightactive. Maybe they are also not the most enduranced creatures, but they are stronger than elephants and some of them can be higher than a skyscraper.
