4. Coastal course Randøya

The course contained multiple activities such as: fishing, preparing fishing nets, sea-kayaking, rowing, large boats deep and shallow water biology and survival night at island.

Monday 29.5.

We gathered at Kongshavn port at 10am. Kjetil and Len came there with motor boats to pick up us, equipment and our luggage. It took around 20 minutes of nice cruise before we got to place we stayed. After we got onshore, we went to our rooms, had a lunch a prepared for activities. We were divided into several groups. The groups included both Norwegian and international students. I was lucky and I had really good group with Flo and Elouse! Our first activity was large boat. We had to packed our day pack and had short lesson about marine maps. After that we were divided into smaller groups and tried to drive a boat. We also did fishing during cruise. In the end Kjetil showed us how to fillet fish.

Tuesday 30.9.

We started our day with rowboats. For me it was something new so start was little bit difficult. The boats are completely different. We made about 5 kilometres trip in the archipelago with a break in one of the bays, learning knots. There were sea kayaks with Len in the afternoon. It was my favourite lesson, because we played funny games (change positions, stand positions in couple or team, catch game) and practised technique.

Wednesday 31.5.

We started with kayak trip. The wind was really strong so we had to change our first plan and choose the way, which was more protected again wind. The second activity was shallow water biology with Svein. We went to the shore. The equipment which we used was: wading pants, plastic boxes, small metal nets and book of sea species. By walking in shallow water, we were discovering organisms living in there. It was some different kinds of sea weed, snails, crabs, small fishes etc. It was interesting and I was suprised how rich is the sea flora!

Thursday 1.6. (survival day)

In the morning there was deep water biology for us. After picking up all necessary equipment such as thick wet suits, snorkel, mask, fins and net bags. It was also necessary to wear wetsuits with hoods and neoprene gloves. The sea was very cold! It was nice experience ,because I have never thought that I’ll be snorkelling in Norway. In the afternoon we had short instruction how to work fishing nets and after went to the isand. We had really nice time together like a group. We played game, prepared food and everybody did something! I think that it was the best team work during this term and I really enoyed it!

Friday 2.6.

We cleaned the nets and prepared fish soup (we added apple juice – I have never seen this!), which was very tasty! In the afternoon we only cleaned our accommodation and went home!

This course was something new for me, because I didn’t have experience with this stuff. I am really happy that I had opportunity to learn something about sea life. I learn a lot of new things, which will be useful for me in future life – specially how to catch ad prepare fish! I am also really grateful that we had nice group and I felt comfortable during whole week!
