Location:<\/em><\/strong> Jegersberg forest in Kristiansand, Southern Norway.<\/p>\n

Breaking\u00a0off\u00a0into\u00a0smaller\u00a0groups\u00a0we\u00a0completed\u00a0a\u00a0three\u00a0night, self-organised\u00a0trip.\u00a0Jegersberg\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0chosen\u00a0location and is situated in the West Agder region just North of the city of Kristiansand.\u00a0Pine\u00a0and\u00a0birch\u00a0trees\u00a0lined\u00a0the\u00a0paths while\u00a0blueberry\u00a0bushes\u00a0could\u00a0be\u00a0found\u00a0filling\u00a0the\u00a0gaps\u00a0between\u00a0the\u00a0trees.\u00a0Several\u00a0rocky outcrops\u00a0could\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0found\u00a0covered\u00a0in\u00a0trees\u00a0and\u00a0moss\u00a0and\u00a0boulders\u00a0were\u00a0seen\u00a0scattered around\u00a0also. It is quite a hilly area with several streams and lakes. The\u00a0ground\u00a0was\u00a0mainly\u00a0dry\u00a0due\u00a0to\u00a0Kristiansand\u00a0having\u00a0encountered\u00a0no\u00a0rain\u00a0for quite\u00a0some\u00a0time.\u00a0However\u00a0close\u00a0to\u00a0lakes\u00a0there\u00a0was\u00a0still\u00a0some\u00a0swampy,\u00a0marsh\u00a0land. The\u00a0weather\u00a0was\u00a0clear,\u00a0mostly\u00a0sunny\u00a0but\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0cold\u00a0wind.\u00a0Plenty\u00a0of\u00a0birds\u00a0could\u00a0be\u00a0seen\u00a0and heard\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0early\u00a0hours\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0morning\u00a0til\u00a0late\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0evening\u00a0and\u00a0insects\u00a0were\u00a0rife\u00a0with\u00a0ants, flies\u00a0and\u00a0spiders\u00a0being\u00a0seen\u00a0everywhere.<\/p>\n

Before\u00a0the\u00a0trip\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0a\u00a0meeting\u00a0where\u00a0we\u00a0established\u00a0aims,\u00a0a\u00a0route\u00a0plan,\u00a0food\u00a0partners, equipment\u00a0and\u00a0norms.\u00a0Our\u00a0main\u00a0aims\u00a0for\u00a0this\u00a0trip\u00a0were\u00a0to\u00a0improve\u00a0and\u00a0learn\u00a0more\u00a0about shelter\u00a0building\u00a0and\u00a0navigation.<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0route\u00a0plan\u00a0was\u00a0as\u00a0follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u00a0began\u00a0at\u00a0Spicheren\u00a0and\u00a0walked\u00a0straight\u00a0through\u00a0to\u00a0our\u00a0first\u00a0camp\u00a0site,\u00a0Kyrtjonn.\u00a0We arrived\u00a0with\u00a0plenty\u00a0of\u00a0time\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0on\u00a0different\u00a0types\u00a0of\u00a0shelters\u00a0which\u00a0was\u00a0great.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0trip\u00a0to\u00a0\u2018The\u00a0Inverted\u00a0Boat\u2019\u00a0was\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0agenda\u00a0for\u00a0day\u00a02.\u00a0We\u00a0worked\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0Navigation by\u00a0veering\u00a0off\u00a0the\u00a0main\u00a0paths.\u00a0In\u00a0the\u00a0midst\u00a0of\u00a0trees\u00a0and\u00a0shrubs\u00a0we\u00a0worked\u00a0on\u00a0using\u00a0bearings to\u00a0go\u00a0from\u00a0place\u00a0to\u00a0place.\u00a0We\u00a0also\u00a0practiced\u00a0reading\u00a0the\u00a0map\u00a0and\u00a0looking\u00a0at\u00a0surroundings\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0out\u00a0an\u00a0exact\u00a0location.\u00a0Eventually\u00a0we\u00a0set\u00a0up\u00a0our\u00a0second\u00a0camp\u00a0at\u00a0Oygardstjonn where\u00a0we\u00a0spent\u00a0the\u00a0night\u00a0building\u00a0up\u00a0new\u00a0shelters\u00a0and\u00a0witling.\u00a0On\u00a0the\u00a0third\u00a0day\u00a0we\u00a0headed back\u00a0to\u00a0Kyrtjonn\u00a0where\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0way\u00a0we\u00a0again\u00a0focused\u00a0on\u00a0navigation\u00a0but\u00a0this\u00a0with\u00a0more focus\u00a0on\u00a0pacing.\u00a0Once\u00a0back\u00a0at\u00a0Kyrtjonn\u00a0we\u00a0worked\u00a0on\u00a0improving\u00a0our\u00a0shelters\u00a0made\u00a0the first\u00a0night.\u00a0The\u00a0last\u00a0day\u00a0was\u00a0spent\u00a0packing\u00a0up\u00a0and\u00a0walking\u00a0home.\u00a0We\u00a0kept\u00a0the\u00a0plan\u00a0quite flexible\u00a0so\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0could\u00a0work\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0aims.<\/p>\n

1. Did\u00a0your\u00a0plan\u00a0comply\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0practical\u00a0outcome?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our\u00a0plan\u00a0complied\u00a0well\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0practical\u00a0outcome.\u00a0There\u00a0were\u00a0several\u00a0areas\u00a0where we\u00a0were\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0practice\u00a0navigation.\u00a0We\u00a0used\u00a0orienteering\u00a0points\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0us\u00a0when\u00a0revising walking\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0bearing\u00a0and\u00a0used\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cfind\u00a0the\u00a0coin\u201d\u00a0game\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0with\u00a0pacing.\u00a0This\u00a0is\u00a0where\u00a0a coin\u00a0was\u00a0placed\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0ground\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0to\u00a0walk\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0perfect\u00a0square\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0certain\u00a0bearing. Time was also spent looking at features on a map – what all the symbols are and using them in order to find your current location. We\u00a0also\u00a0learnt\u00a0several\u00a0new\u00a0ways\u00a0of\u00a0setting\u00a0up\u00a0a\u00a0shelter\u00a0using\u00a0both\u00a0a\u00a0tarp\u00a0and\u00a0natural\u00a0resources.<\/p>\n

2. How\u00a0did\u00a0your\u00a0equipment\u00a0work,\u00a0what\u00a0was\u00a0missing,\u00a0what\u00a0was\u00a0redundant?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0equipment\u00a0that\u00a0was\u00a0missing\u00a0was\u00a0perhaps\u00a0a\u00a0shovel.\u00a0Apart\u00a0from\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0all\u00a0had\u00a0adequate clothing,\u00a0maps,\u00a0compasses,\u00a0packs,\u00a0food,\u00a0first\u00a0aid\u00a0kits,\u00a0rope,\u00a0tarp,\u00a0knives\u00a0etc.\u00a0The\u00a0tarps would\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0better\u00a0if\u00a0they\u00a0were\u00a0proper\u00a0shelter\u00a0tarps\u00a0or\u00a0\u201choochies\u201d\u00a0as\u00a0these\u00a0are\u00a0lighter and\u00a0come\u00a0with\u00a0string\u00a0but\u00a0we\u00a0dealt\u00a0with\u00a0what\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0worked\u00a0just\u00a0as\u00a0well.\u00a0The\u00a0saw\u00a0we borrowed\u00a0was\u00a0not\u00a0great\u00a0also.\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0blunt\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0blade\u00a0was\u00a0loose\u00a0making\u00a0it\u00a0very\u00a0hard\u00a0to\u00a0cut through\u00a0branches.\u00a0Apart\u00a0from\u00a0that\u00a0all\u00a0our\u00a0equipment\u00a0was\u00a0great.<\/p>\n

3. Nutrition,\u00a0what\u00a0did\u00a0you\u00a0eat,\u00a0how\u00a0did\u00a0you\u00a0function\u00a0on\u00a0this\u00a0food,\u00a0was\u00a0it\u00a0sufficient?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Marie,\u00a0Amy\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0decided\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0would\u00a0organize\u00a0our\u00a0own\u00a0breakfast\u00a0and\u00a0lunch\u00a0but\u00a0do\u00a0dinner\u00a0together. For\u00a0breakfast\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0premade\u00a0muesli\u00a0with\u00a0banana\u00a0and\u00a0coconut\u00a0milk.\u00a0I\u00a0feel\u00a0that\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0sufficient breakfast\u00a0as\u00a0it\u00a0filled\u00a0me\u00a0up\u00a0and\u00a0gave\u00a0me\u00a0energy\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0day\u2019s\u00a0activities.\u00a0For\u00a0lunch\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0home-made\u00a0calzone\u00a0filled\u00a0with\u00a0fresh\u00a0vegetables.\u00a0Again,\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0sufficient\u00a0and\u00a0an\u00a0alternative\u00a0to\u00a0taking sandwiches.\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0filled\u00a0with\u00a0lots\u00a0of\u00a0vegetables\u00a0and\u00a0was\u00a0low\u00a0in\u00a0salt\u00a0and\u00a0saturated\u00a0fat. For\u00a0snacks\u00a0I\u00a0took\u00a0fresh\u00a0fruit\u00a0and\u00a0vegetables\u00a0including\u00a0mushrooms,\u00a0carrots,\u00a0cucumber\u00a0and\u00a0apples as\u00a0well\u00a0as\u00a0some\u00a0sweets\u00a0for\u00a0quick\u00a0energy.\u00a0For\u00a0dinner\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0pasta,\u00a0vegetables,\u00a0tuna\u00a0and\u00a0pesto and\u00a0rice,\u00a0vegetables,\u00a0tuna\u00a0and\u00a0red\u00a0curry.\u00a0Both\u00a0were\u00a0nutritious,\u00a0replenishing\u00a0and\u00a0filling. I\u00a0functioned\u00a0quite\u00a0well\u00a0on\u00a0this\u00a0food,\u00a0having\u00a0had\u00a0plenty\u00a0of\u00a0energy\u00a0and\u00a0feeling\u00a0great\u00a0on\u00a0all\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0days.<\/p>\n

4. What\u00a0kind\u00a0of\u00a0shelter\u00a0did\u00a0you\u00a0use,\u00a0how\u00a0did\u00a0it\u00a0function?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

To\u00a0build\u00a0our\u00a0shelters\u00a0we\u00a0used\u00a0logs\u00a0and\u00a0tarp.\u00a0Two\u00a0of\u00a0our\u00a0shelters\u00a0consisted\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0log\u00a0resting on\u00a0a\u00a0tree\u00a0branch\u00a0and\u00a0another\u00a0log.\u00a0The\u00a0vertical\u00a0log\u00a0was\u00a0held\u00a0in\u00a0place\u00a0by\u00a0rocks\u00a0and\u00a0rope. The\u00a0tarp\u00a0was\u00a0then\u00a0attached\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0tree\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0log\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0another\u00a0tree\u00a0and\u00a0rock\u00a0on\u00a0the other\u00a0side.\u00a0Another\u00a0tarp\u00a0was\u00a0put\u00a0in\u00a0place\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0ground\u00a0sheet.\u00a0Our\u00a0main\u00a0aim\u00a0for\u00a0this\u00a0shelter was\u00a0the\u00a0block\u00a0as\u00a0much\u00a0wind\u00a0as\u00a0possible\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0seemed\u00a0to\u00a0work.<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0second\u00a0shelter\u00a0was\u00a0an\u00a0A-frame\u00a0type\u00a0shelter.\u00a0We\u00a0tied\u00a0a\u00a0piece\u00a0of\u00a0rope\u00a0between\u00a0two\u00a0trees,\u00a0hung\u00a0the\u00a0tarp\u00a0over\u00a0it\u00a0and\u00a0then put\u00a0out\u00a0the\u00a0bottoms\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0tarp\u00a0with\u00a0logs.\u00a0Again\u00a0the\u00a0main\u00a0aim\u00a0was\u00a0to\u00a0block\u00a0out\u00a0the\u00a0wind\u00a0and so,\u00a0because\u00a0we\u00a0knew\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0not\u00a0to\u00a0rain,\u00a0we\u00a0set\u00a0up\u00a0the\u00a0ground\u00a0sheet\u00a0so\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0blocked\u00a0off one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0entrances.\u00a0This\u00a0made\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0warm\u00a0night.<\/p>\n

We also looked at other shelters including a shelter made entirely out of natural resources. Using three larger logs and then several smaller logs the frame was set up. The larger logs were used in an A-frame formation and the smaller logs were criss-crossed on one side of the frame. The smaller logs were then covered in tree branches.<\/p>\n

Building a shelter is not always easy but if you assess the area and resources that you have, you should always be able to create a sufficient shelter. The main things to keep in mind are the weather – particularly wind, snow and rain, whether everybody can comfortably fit under your shelter and ensuring that your shelter is strong enough and will remain standing all night.<\/p>\n

5. How did you cope carrying the\u00a0necessary\u00a0equipment, what would you do differently?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0coped\u00a0perfectly\u00a0fine\u00a0carrying\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0necessary\u00a0equipment.\u00a0I\u00a0managed\u00a0to\u00a0fit\u00a0it\u00a0all\u00a0into\u00a0my rucksack\u00a0without\u00a0anything\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0outside.\u00a0I\u00a0would\u00a0maybe\u00a0bring\u00a0more\u00a0water\u00a0next\u00a0time\u00a0so\u00a0I did\u00a0not\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0boil\u00a0some\u00a0but\u00a0apart\u00a0from\u00a0that,\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0comfortable\u00a0trip.<\/p>\n

Overall\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0trip.\u00a0As\u00a0we\u00a0made\u00a0it\u00a0fairly\u00a0flexible,\u00a0we\u00a0found\u00a0we\u00a0had\u00a0more\u00a0time\u00a0to complete\u00a0campcraft\u00a0and\u00a0navigational\u00a0activities.\u00a0We\u00a0definitely\u00a0underestimated\u00a0our walking\u00a0pace\u00a0though\u00a0so\u00a0perhaps\u00a0next\u00a0time\u00a0we\u00a0could\u00a0hike\u00a0longer\u00a0on\u00a0some\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0days but\u00a0all\u00a0in\u00a0all,\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0comfortable\u00a0and\u00a0educational.<\/p>\n\n\t\n\t\t
