Activities:
We started the day by meeting up at Spicheren and then walked to Jegersberg. The Norwegian group in charge explained the tradition of the Sunday trip in Norway.
Every Sunday many families go for a hike, take a sack lunch and make a campfire in the nature. Even when it is raining the weather doesn´t matter for the Norwegians: they taught us the Norwegian slogan “there is no bed weather only bad clothes!”
To mix up the international and Norwegian students we played tug of war. The game helped us to get in touch with the Norwegian students. After this we followed our guides to the mountain “Den Omvendte Båt”. On the way we had a break with the orange and kvikklunjs what is as we learned typical Norwegian.
On the top of the Den Omvendte Båt we were learned something about the mountain’s history and the role in the resistance against the German occupation.
On the way back we had to change our plans: the plan was to make a campfire on the mountaintop but due to the weather conditions we weren´t able to start a fire on the top of the mountain. So we went down to the lake to find wind-sheltered area for our camp fire. We got to know the Norwegian BBQ and made sausages and stick-bread with a sharpened stick on the fire. Finally we went back to Spicheren.
Learning outcome:
We got to know Norwegian traditions and culture
We get in contact with the Norwegian Students
We got some information about the historical background of the area
We learned how to make sausages on a campfire without a grill
Evaluation:
The first Monday trip with the Norwegian students was good to break the ice between the international and the Norwegian frilufstliv group. It was interesting to experience this kind of typical Norwegian family trips by ourselves. Besides that we got to know the Jegersberg area and enjoyed the nature next to the university.
Even though there was not a lot of learning outcome on this day, I really liked it because it provided us with an insight in Norwegian tradition, Norwegian culture and Norwegian people.
