Assignment 10: Canoeing and Biking Trip (27.04 – 30.04)

On Monday we left for the Byglandsfjord further north of Kristiansand, where we started our first Canoeing this semester. The group was split for that tour (other half did it the week before) and we were 11 students. First we  had a basic technic session from the british people. I didn’t like it much when they were teaching us, because I was already familiar with the basic strokes and they didn’t know much more than that or didn’t show us more. On the calm Fjord it was easy to handle the canoe but after 2 hours a storm came up with some rain and the girls struggeled to move against the wind.

We stopped at a beach and had to make us some shelter for the night.Osvaldas, Kirby and me started with our shelter, when the rest of the brits joined in at our spot and we had a big shelter together with a campfire in the middle. Using the canoes and what we could find on the beach we made quite a good shelter, which withstand rain, hail and snowfall. Once the weather changed, I could borrow a hammock and slept my first time in one of these. Once it stopped shaking, it was quite comfortable.

Next day we continued with sunshine and at the afternoon arrived at Trollaktiv, an activitycenter, which we stayed at the first skitrip already. Some went rafting. I prefered having dinner. Next day we started biking to a close crag, where we climbed for the rest of the day and set up our shelters for the night. After a rainy night we packed everything together and hidden our luggage near the road (our teacher picked it up on the way to get the canoes back). After 60 km biking we arrived back in Kristiansand. Didn’t take my camera on the trip, so no photos.

All together it was a great trip, whereby the building of the shelters was a lot of fun. The canoeing in the calm water was quite boring and also the biking wasn’t my velocity. The climbing on the crag was awesome and after the trip I thought about getting a whole set of climbing gear when I get back to Germany. On this trip where mostly people I didn’t have much contact on the trips before and I changed my mind about some people during the four days.
