They week after our first exams we went with the whole group and also the norwegian friluftsliv students to an close island from Monday to Friday. On the island is a former headquarter of the german occupation and you can still see a lot of bunkers. We also had a tour with one of our teachers into the headquarter where still the old radar systems and communication rooms were seeable. We stayed in the refurbished barracks of the war time which still had their old “charm”. There was a good kitchen in a mainbuilding where we prepared lots of fish. In the whole week I filleted around 15 – 20 fish.
On this trip we didn’t have just Len with us. There were alltogether four teachers and also the students were split into four group which were a mixture of internationals and norwegians. I liked that alot because the new people in the group made the whole thing more exiting.
On the program there was Sea kajaking, Rowing boats, Sea navigation and steering a motorboat, net fishing and the preparing of fish, shallow water biology and snorkling. Every day you had two different activities. My favorite was the snorkling and I would have liked to continue when the hour of snorkling was over. On top of that there was one night with an island survival.
On the island survival we went out in our group (10-12 people) to a smaller island and had to stay there until the next morning. When we had our survival night, there joined us two girls from a fitness study programm, who missed a trip once. We were not allowed to take sleeping bags or sleeping mats with us.
On our island were no trees but a lot of driftwood and rubbish between the rocks. I got lucky and found a hassock for a garden chair. We had three rowing boarts and went fishing first and got more wood from a close island. Afterwards we built the shelters for the night and light a fire at the beach. We prepared the fish and fryed it on stones close to the fire. We tryed also some fried snails, but they were disgusting.
People had different ways to keep themselves warm once we went to bed: Re-light the fire everytime you wake up to coldness, snuggle together or wear a lot of layers of clothes. While there was great weather on the day I was out on the island and had a great time with freshly caught fish over the fire, an other group had rain all night.
I liked the activieties we had in this week and also liked to have a trip with the norwegian people. The island was a great spot to bring classes to, independently from the age of the students. It could be more pleasant, if the information regarding the shallow water biology was more structured and in english.
