The 1st of February was the date of the last Monday trip organised by the Norwegians. We met again outside Spicheren and collected a piece of firewood before making a short hike into Jegersberg where we had been the two previous times. We were split into two big groups, and a route had been devised and each group went in separate directions. Upon arriving at the first challenge, the group was then split into 3 teams. We were then told that we would one person from each group would be carried up up and down a hill by the other members of the group. Then another person would have their “broken leg” stabilised by two sticks and then again the rest of the group would have to carry them up and down the hill without the leg moving. The winner is the first team back without the leg moving much past the finish line. I enjoyed this game as it was a challenge trying to stabilise the leg with improvisation as it’s something I’ve not done before.
The next challenge, was to build the highest tower in the given time. This game was all about tactics and how you would approach the challenge. My group decided we would go for a council fire type of tower so we didn’t use many sticks but it was stable and rising quickly. After completing this task but unfortunately losing by inches, we then moved back to the ‘base camp’ for lunch. It had started raining at this point, however it still did not take lunch to get a fire going. We decided to make it under the canopy of one of the trees as to protect it from the rain so it didn’t go out. Today I decided that I would make a change from just bringing hot dogs and decided to bring cheese and salami sandwiches and then toast them over the fire using tin foil which was very tasty as it had a smoky taste from the fire that I seemed to enjoy.
We didn’t stay long for lunch as it was wet and getting cold so we moved onto the next activity. The 3rd activity was an interesting one that I hadn’t done before. We had a rope going across a certain area suspended in the air and our task was to build a fire high enough to burn the rope in the quickest time. We decided to make a Tippi fire as this would mean since the sticks were pointing up the flames would be higher. The final activity was a memory game. One person from each group had to run to an area where there was an image and then they had to run back to the group and describe the image to the group and they had to then replicate it using sticks they found and if they couldn’t remember anything else the next person would run and try memorise as much as possible. This was good as it put your memory to the test when you’re under pressure and it was fun to see how much people remembered from a fairly simple image.
