Our meeting point was at the bottom of Odderøya just before the bridge at 5pm. We brought our sleeping mats, bags, and a couple of tents. Paige had brought some dry firewood for us to start a fire from the local petrol station, which came to around 100 krone so we split this between us so it came out cheaper. We then grabbed the stuff and hiked up to Odderøya and decided to walk around and find a suitable spot to camp. We found a flat area next to an old WW2 bunker, which was also protected by some rocks from the wind, which meant it, was a good area to camp at. We then decided that our first course of action would be to put up the tents as the weather did not look great and the weather forecast indicated that there would be a 30% chance of rain around 8pm. After much confusion about how which poles went in which holes we had finally got the tents up! After this we then decided that it would be suitable to go for a hike around the island to discover what it had on offer. After around 20 minutes of walking round the trail, I showed them a track that led slightly off the main one and into some hidden caves which none of the others knew about. This then brought us out at the sea and gave us a beautiful view of the surrounding area. We stayed here for 15 minutes just taking in the beautiful view before we decided to continue venturing around the island. Of course we had with us a map and a compass, however I had been on this island many times with my Norwegian friends who had showed me it in early January, so I knew my way round and plus it was more or less just stick to the track and it will take you in a circle round the island with a couple of twist and turns on the way but not many. We then made it back to the camp at 8pm and decided that it was time for dinner, so we set up a storm kitchen and made some pasta with tomato sauce and then made a fire with the logs we had brought for warmth. We also used this fire to make dessert… Hot dogs and ketchup! After sitting around the fire for a couple of hours it slowly started to rain so we retreated back into our tents and then spent the rest of the night in our sleeping bags as there was nothing left to do. This was a learning experience for me as I then realised when thinking about overnighting, you can’t just think of the essentials, but also just to bring stuff to keep you entertained. So next time I decided that I would bring cards with me to pass the time! We woke the next morning and packed up our tent as decided to go for one last walk round the island before heading home.
