This has been one of my favourite weekends. The Holmenkollen Ski Festival is such a big thing here in Norway and there are so many people here in Oslo already!
We arrived in Oslo this afternoon after taking a 5 hour bus journey and getting lost in the city! We eventually managed to find the rest of the group and headed to the ‘Fram’ museum. The ‘Fram’ was a ship built for polar expeditions by Colin Archer in 1892, and was used for the famous expedition to the South Pole by Fridtjof Nansen and Ronald Amundsen. It was really interesting to see the ship which was used and which people lived on for 3 years. We were able to go onto the ship and see how small all the rooms were.
In the morning we went to the Ski museum together, this was at the top of the Ski jump which was pretty cool. The museum was really good, and showed how the ski jump had changed so many times over the years since it was first built. It also showed Ski’s used from many different centuries and how they had developed. After the museum it was time for the men’s 50km race, watching this was fantastic and it was unbelievable how many people were there supporting!
In the evening it was time for more Ski jumps, as we had to pay to go into the stadium we all decided to find somewhere to sit outside and watch and we still had a good view. We headed back to camp after the jumps and had dinner by the fire and did a bit of sledging around the camp site before bed.
On the final morning it was time to pack up our tents and get our things ready to leave later on that day. Once we were packed it was time to watch the women’s 30km race, on the site there was a really nice restaurant, we could sit outside here with coffee in the sun whilst watching the race as everything was so close together. In the evening it was time to the final Ski jumps, we watched from a good stop outside of the stadium again and the atmosphere was fantastic. Once everything was finished it was time for us to leave in time to get back to Oslo and take the bus back home to Kristiansand.
