The plan for this evening was to camp out in the chosen area and wake early in the morning for bird watching. Between April and June are the best times to spot the birds we were looking for. We arrived by car at the area around 30 minutes from Kristiansand and walked into an open area which was good for bird watching. The shelter which we would sleep in was already set up – it was important for us to not be seen in the area as to not scare the birds we hoped to see. The shelter was set up in between trees and was really low down to the ground with a few holes to look out of so that we didn’t disturb them in the morning.
This was planned by biologist Svein, he took us on a short tour around the forrest in the evening and gave us some information on the types of things we can eat from the nature and what we should avoid. During this i ate an ant! which was not so nice.. on our walk we heard a lot of birds and Svein told us about where they were from and he knew all about where they were going which was really interesting. The main bird we wanted to spot was the Black Grouse. In the evening we set up a stuffed bird 50m from the shelter as to encourage the other birds to approach in the morning, we had dinner and slept quite early as we had to wake early.
At around 5am we were woken by he bird which we hoped to see, it was loud and seemed really close. Ufortunatley we didn’t manage to see the bird the whole morning which was a shame, but Svein gave us some information about the specific bird and where we could find it etc.
For me this was a really nice overnight trip, although we didn’t see what we wanted to in the morning, we still got chance to spot some birds in the evening and learn a bit about them as well and getting more information about nature biology.
