01. Overnight in Jegersberg

Tonight was our first overnight trip together, we left to Jegersberg in the afternoon where we found a good open space with enough room for us to put up our tents quite close to each other. We were already in tent groups from when we put the tents up at university for practise. In my tent group was Tadas, Osvaldas and Roman. We set the tent up much quicker than the first time we tried and we had a really good flat spot. For the moment the weather was dry but it would rain tonight.

After this, we played some group dynamic games, 2 from each country. This was a great way for us to learn these new games which i had never played most of before, and for us as a group to do this together to build on our own dynamics. There was a lot of snow and ice on the ground so these games were really fun!

Once we finished all the games it was time for a cook camp task! The idea of this was for us learn/demonstrate how and what we can cook using the stoves provided with little ingredients. Len gave each tent group some basic ingredients such as: fish, vegetables and potatoes, we were allowed to bring anything extra which we needed for the dinner. Our group decided to make a fish soup. We thought that this was something easy and fairly quick to be cooked when camping and a good way to get a lot of protein and hot liquid – very important in the winter.

Once all the groups had finished cooking we presented our dinners to the rest for everyone to try, we would then give marks to each group on presentation and taste. Our presentation was not so good but the taste was great.

After dinner Len left and we sat around the camp fire with marshmallows talking for the evening. Once i got into the tent i made sure to wear as many layers as possible as i was already feeling cold. In the night i was quite cold, i slept on the end and felt wet in the night as it rained a lot and i was pushed up against the tent.

Learning Outcomes:

Although i really enjoyed this overnight trip, it was a good way for me to find out that i needed to do more to stay warm in the night. We now know that we need to make the tent tighter to avoid the water collecting on the inside, i will also buy an inlay for my sleeping bag to add a bit more warmth for the snow hole/winter trips. I also know now that getting into my sleeping bag when already cold is not a good idea. Next time i will walk/run around the area until i feel warm then get into my sleeping bag so that i have body heat in the night.
