Reflection assignment Nr. 7 Randoya coastal field trip

The first day of the trip we went to Randoya with the bus and the boat and my first activity was rowing. In the evening we had a short lecture about the history of Randoya and we threw out the net to catch fish. The second day we had to stand up early to get the net back in and prepare our catch fishes. We caught six, so cool! After that I had kayaking and driving with a motorboat. In the evening we had a nice last evening all together, where we sang songs. On the last day I had biology and after that we already went back to Kristiansand.

I learned a lot of new things during this trip, for example how I clean a fish, how to throw a net out, how to drive a motorboat, which wild plants I could eat etc. I really liked that aspect of the trip and loved that I learned again so much new things at the end. I also saw again a lot about group dynamics. We were divided in 4 groups, because of COVID-19. This time I had the feeling that the groups mixed more in the evening and didn’t stay a lot in their own groups, what was nice. You saw that there was a group cohesion with the whole group and not only with the little groups. In my group I aslo felt comfortable. We could work together good and had a good time together. The trip was too short and too organised to go through the group development stages in my opinion. Social loafing I saw less, than during the other trips. I think the good cohesion played a role in that. I think it was nice to learn rowing and kayaking in the open sea, because you had to really use your techniques to go straight, so that wouldn’t drift off or went in the wrong direction, because of the wind and the waves. That’s something you wouldn’t learn on a flat lake, with no waves.

If I know look back on this half year it’s overwhelming how much experiences I got in such a short time. I really experienced the Norwegian way of life or friluftsliv and I love it. The freedom, the peace, the challenge and the learning opportunities. I got to know myself better, my strengths and my weaknesses and I learned a lot about group dynamics and leadership. This half year will be now a part of me that I will take with my in my further life, for example in my further carrier. I think that young adults in the special youth care could learn a lot about experiencing the things I experienced now, by being in nature and doing stuff that they like. Not only learn about themselves, but also about others and how the world works. Also not only young adults in the special youth care. I think experiencing this can be an added value for everyone! I also wrote my bachelor thesis about this subject (How outdoor activities in nature can support young adults between 14 and 18 years in special youth care with their self development) and I really hope that this thesis can make a difference in my work field.
