Donnevann trip
«To wake up and look strait up to the blue sky and discover that the trees above you have bloomed on the last three days that you have been in the woods… That is a scenery that you only can wish for.. «

The last three days have we hosted outdoor workshops for the Russ of 2016. three classes and tons of experience later can I know look back and evaluate how I think I went and discover what I actually learned from it.

The fact to be standing and say to those young people, that they have arrived to a deserted island and they have stolen our water from the fountain of youth, is pretty weird. They are not kids and I felt really strange trying to but energy and create a sustain atmosphere the first time, especially because I came up with the story in the moment. But in some way it worked… They put energy and effort in to the task they got, even though it was as simple as getting all the members from A to B.

– of corse we challenged them and change the rules if they did to good. even tho I much say that I think they took the task a 100 % and played along..

That was the second work shop that I had to arrange. Me and Max have had the streacher the day before, and I was hilarious to see how different the students skills were and also to see how different Max and I actually ran the different workshops. The reason why we shifted in taking charge was that if we did it together we would say different things and just confuse more than necessary. Max was more up front, giving them the complete task and what was going to happen afterwards. I was more this is how you are making the streacher, go practice.. And then afterwards telling them that they were going to race against time. I don’t know what was the best, but they both worked and they all learned the rope task to, even though there was different streams in between “ohh no my shoes”, “stop I can walk any further, there are muds” and “I can’t hold her any more” 😀 A fun workshop with a lot of laughter from Max and I.

The last day we had the kano workshop, and that was a lot of fun. It was incredible to see how different the groups were in kanoing skills. That was also why this workshop shifted shape every time. We made a classic one, where they had to do the slalom and around the island and then do a 180 and backwards to the finish line. And then we mixed it up for the good ones, slalom, the opposite way around and the backwards, then they had to shift bots and do it again so the one that did not get to stear before got the chance and then in the end we ended up by chasing them – but of corse we were not going to win, and Max made sure of that and with a little bit of acting, they belived that we sucked at kanoing an lost :D:D:D

The teaching part was learning experience and doing it in practis was great. Doing night time we were off and that made us in the class have a chance to be all together and talk and get more togetherness within the class.

If I should put my teaching and leadership in to a theoretical perspective I would say that after learning and getting knowledge about friluftlivsvejledning I may say that it all depend of the situation that you are in. If the students are good to go and they know how just a little bit about how to do it then I have an adaptive/flexible leadership, but if you are in a situation where someone already capsize by getting in the kano at shallow water and comes to you and say, “I can’t really swim, or just a little bit”, then I have a bit more autocratic way of teaching. I think the challenges with the teaching different groups and skill level is a huge advantage for the future teaching – even though you know that the way to become better is by doing it and keep doing!
