Kayaking trip the 18th of may

The weather was grey and the wind was from the southwest, which meant that we had onshore wind. In a little bay southwest from Kristiansand 10 kayaks were put in the water for a day trip around Hellesund. In and out and from island to island we padel and took turns by leading the group. I had the pleasure of taking the second leg and here I chose to led the group from the back. I wanted to make sure that no one were to fare behind and by communicating with Domenic. I made the choise of having him in the front guiding the group into the small bay, but I had a stop half way to gather everyone. I paddled up to Domenic and told him that we were aiming for a greenhouse and by setting him off fast the group got gathered but did not stop entierly. The only thing that I did not know was how far from the costline we were suppose to be, but later on we were told that better be longer out that to close to the coast…

When my leg was over, I took the hole role of being a teacher on me, and told them that it would be good to be padeling three and three, because if someone capzies you have two people fairly close to you… I got a good respond on that and even though the group had not been to far from each other. We kept padeling for 2 hours and had an hour break at Kapel island. A small island that is a protected area, and therefore are you allowed to camp there. We were told that this was the place that we were suppose to camp if this had been an overnight trip. It was nice, and we just took our time eating and relaxing. After a while we got back in the kayaks and paddled back. The route before lunch was in shelter of the wind and we mostly paddled in between small rocks and islands. But after lunch we headed out on the outside of the islands which meant that we got some more waves as well as wind. The wind was still in the back, but it was challenging and testing the balance as well as the technical skills.

When we got near to the small bay to get out and home we had two volunteer capzies. Joey did not mind to do it and it was interesting to see how some people went in the back and how someone paddle in the front – I was one of them in the front. I have done the capzice drill a few time and when Joey capziced the first time, he forgot to grab his kayak. This mad it really challenging to get a hole of the kayak. Pulling it up was not difficult, it was difficult to get the kayak to joey afterwards, because we were drifing fast towards the coasline. The second time Joey capziced, Domenice capziced by accident and while I got a hold of Joey kayak, getting him back in it, there were some communicational problems with getting Domenic kayak up. It ended up with that we got to close to the coastline and had to break up and Len took over and helped. It was a great practice for the group. And the day ended up with evaluating on what to remember if you capzice.

 – Overall a good day on the water, it would have been perfect if the sun had been out, but you cant always have everything 🙂
