RANDØYA the 23th to 27th of mai

We all meet up at Kongholmen and got in a boat and sailed out to an old Messel. Here we divided up into the two cabins. The first class started at 2 and I was on the biology shallow water, and the task was to see what kind of animals and plants that lives around randøya. On with the Vaders and out in the water. After some time in the water we went up and looked on everything we found. We had a good talk and I learned about the different species and plants.

The next day we began at 9.30 and then went to the water again. This time we had the chance of finding species in deeper water by snorkeling. This was cold at first and then we were in the water for a half an hour to 45 min. Looking and checking out what was on the bottom of the little bay. We found sea stars, a snail, a mousel and plenty of other sort of stuff. It was interesting to hear what the different things were and how they were connected. After that lesson there was a lunch break and then we went to the dock. We were going to have an introduction to rowing and after that putting fishing nets out in the bay. We talked about how the fishing nets worked and how to sort them out before setting them in the water. After rowing around in the two small bays, we brought the fishing equipment to the rowing boats and went out. Of course we brought a day pack because after setting the nets, we had to go to an island.

An overnight stay with only a daypack and a little portion of food. The teacher had said to us that we had to make and decision out on the water because the wind were picking up and there were a lot of waves. This ended up spitting the group up in two. The majority of the group wanted to go to a closer island because they believed that it was too dangerous to go to the original island. And the minority wanted just to try to go to the original island to get the right survival experience. After talking it ended up with some people were mad that the majority of the group had made the decision already. But in the end we found a nice spot on the tip of the island close to the original island and therefore it was almost the same. From there we just used time on fishing for dinner, making dinner out of the 10 fish we caugth. I tried to make a filet out of one of the fishes and the result was surprisingly good. And then some of us started making a spoon out of wood – simply to make time go faster. Then the sun went down it became colder and we went under a tarp on the ground. But doing the night it began to rain and we needed to get up and built a shelter. This shelter also helped on keeping out the wind that had shifted through the night.

At 6.30 Wednesday morning we went to the boat and took in the fishing nets and went to the dock. After an hour break we meet up at the dock again. Here we sorted out the fish and nets. Learned how to fillet a fish and learned about the different species of fish. It was really interesting and after we had prepared the fish, we made a fish soup and potatoes with fried fillets to. It was really good to get some food after 12 hours with only proteins. We spent time in the afternoon in the motorboat. Learning about navigation at sea and went fishing a little bit. After that I just used the time to sleep and I slept 15 hours in total.

Thursday morning I woke up and felt much better than the day before. We had rowing in the morning and it was finally great to actually learning how to do it right. We had a small tour around the islands and after lunch it was time to kayak. Here we shifted to take legs. We went to the old lighthouse and it was a great tour. I got after a lot of escaping Martin and Chris to them both over. After that I was all wet and I saw the opportunity of trying a cobel of times to make the escimorole. It was hard and I did not successed, but I got some technique.

The last day we went in the kayaks again, and went for a longer tour. There was no wind and it was really beautiful. Even though I thought it was hard work we got the kayaks in to the harbor and put on the trailer. Went back in the motorboat and fixed everything and then we went home.

A good trip with a lot of different tasks and skills as well as a huge learning outcome
