The goal was cooking and setting up camp in the forest of Jegerberg. It was a 10 minut walk from uni. There was rain during the whole day and there was ice on the tracks.

Findings:

During the lectures we got the information about the recreation act. The overnight trip made it possible to apply this act. The recreation act says something about the rules of spending time in nature, the main rules we had to obey were staying of the roads, cultivated lands and respect the nature.

Whilst organizing the camping area I noticed it’s important to keep your gear dry especially when you spend multiple days in the woods. Another convenient thing of camping in the woods during winter is the amount of wind. I learned that it’s less windy in the woods. Furthermore I have experienced that it’s nice to have the inside tent already clipped in the outer tent. This way we kept the inside tent dry.

I’ve cooked before with gasoline/gas storm kitchen but never with a red spirit as a fuel. It was an easy way of lighting it. The downside of the red spirit is that it doesn’t work in cold temperatures. And in the other hand you have to pack it well if you want to transport it, because it spreads faster then water and it smells bad. Furthermore red spirit takes longer then gas to warm up. Gas has this plus. The only bad thing about gas is during cold weather you lose gas from the container. During the night it might be smart to put the gas container in your sleeping bag.

To keep warm I learned a couple important things. This was movement and warm food/drink. A good way to stay warm was playing games with the group. I learned different ways of staying warm and have fun at the same time. The other way to stay warm was to wear different layers of clothing. These where for example: merino underlayers, softshell pants, t-shirt, fleece vest, down jacket, hard-shells.

The campfire we used was small. We did this because we didn’t had a lot of wood. So if made a small fire we could have heat longer. This is nice in the winter because there are not a lot of burning materials that are dry in the winter.

We made multiple dishes during the evening the goal was to make dinner within 20 minutes. I learned that we can make easily nice nutritious meals. These meals where pasta’s, rice dishes, soups and a potato meals. I learned that carbs and proteins are important to get.

Overnight fieldtrip, forest winter Location: Jegersberg, Kristiansand On the 31st of Januari 2018 we did an overnight trip with the outdoor course.
