It was a three day trip true the mountains in . The only flora and fauna around was snow and rock and an occasional tree. We had the privilege to see a herd of deer in the far distance on the first day and on the second day we met a young man who had a dog with him.

Learning outcomes:

During this fieldtrip I wanted to focus on mainly on the experience of carrying a lot of equipment. The main reason for doing this was getting used to the heavy weight on skies. Next to carrying was repeating the techniques we learned from our first basic ski course and building shelters in snowy conditions.

Plan vs. outcome

The plan was to ski from Haukeli center to Hovden in 3 days. The first night we slept near Haukeli Center on the snow planes. We stayed at least a 150 meters away from the buildings considering the law in Norway. The first day we would ski 19 kilometers the second day 10 kilometers and the 3th day we skied another 12 kilometers. The plan was to sleep in the tents we brought with us. The first day was until the end of the afternoon an easy day. The group didn’t struggle physically. The only hard thing we noticed to carry was the polk we brought. Luckily everyone was contributing bye carrying the polk. Especially uphill was quite a struggle uphill without skins. While the night would close in the group got more tired. The last 3 km we had to travel true the dark. For me tis was a nice experience since I never did that before. At the end we had spend the second night in a DNT hut. We did this because we were late in the evening in the area we wanted to be. We were all tired and cold, so we made the descission to stay in the hut to boost our moral and get easily warm food in our bellies. The Second day was a walk in the park comparing to the first skiing day. This was mainly because we went more downhill then the day before and we had the cross a lake for about 6 km this mend we could travel faster. With barely breaks and a high pace we arrived at the next location at lunch time. The weather was just like the first day good which made the trip easier. During this well earned break we decided to go a bit further to find a nice spot to camp. So we skied another 2 km to a spot we would enjoy to stay the rest of the day and night. At that camping spot we played around for a bit on our skies on a hill close bye and set up our tents in the snow. During the evening it got colder. We tried to keep moving to stay warm until we would be tired enough to go to bed. This night windy what made the snow blow up against our tents. That was for no one a problem exept for the tent of Brad and Tom. They did get some snow in there tent because they didn’t had an inner tent. In the morning we continued our journey towards Hovden. Just like the day before it was an easy ski only part that we struggled was one massive climb up a hill and we thought for a bit that we navigated wrong. Both of these problems were temporary. We had found the the path quickly again. At the end of the day I had quite a struggle with skiing downhill this was because I fell quite hard on my face on one bit. This made me lose my confidence a bit which made me falling even more. This struggle kept on going for about 2 hours. After this the hard bits were over and we could just ski over the slopes back to hovden.

Equipment/carrying

The equipment I was carrying for this trip were:

68 liter Rucksack

Gore-tex gloves

Hardshell Jacket

Hardshell trousers

Softshell trousers

Thin pare of cloves

Beany

Woolen underlayer (top-bottom)

1 pair of boxers

2 pair of ski socks

Toothbrush+Toothpaste

Sleepingbag

Sleepingmat

Isomat

Pegs

Firstaid kit

Rain cover Rucksack

Thermos bottle

Small cooking pot.

Avalanche shovel

Avalanche probe

Nutrition:

For all the nights I ate penne pasta with Tuna and Pesto. The reason I ate this because I like the combination and it would give met the carbs and proteins which I needed. As lunch I brought for every day 3 wraps with cheese and salami these were pre-made. Next to that I brought for everyday 100 grams of chocolate and atleast a 100 grams of nuts. For breakfast I would eat aout 140 grams of muesli with raisins and chocolate sprinkels. I chose for this diet because they are things I can easy eat and put in my pockets so I can take shorter breaks and keep on moving if the weather conditions ask me for this.

Shelters:

During this trip we used Our tents except for one night. I slept in a oneman tent this would mean less warmth because I wouldn’t have anyone to share heat with. In the tent I would dig a cold air trench so it would increase the temperature a bit in my tent. The trench would be shovel wide deep. And about 70 cm deep. This way I could easily put my rucksack in the trench. One night we slept in a DNT hut. These huts are accessible for everyone. There based on a honesty payment. So if you use them you leave your bank account number so you can pay later.

Assignment 3 Self organized field trip winter The area we used for our trip was From Haukeli center to Hovden.
