During the preparations we practiced for falling over and paddling technique and basics like how to sit in a kayak properly. The themes were T-rescue and even eskimo rol. For paddling technique it was for instance: stick paddle in at toes and get it out at the butt, rotate your body by every stroke so you spread the power in your upper body instead in only the arms, put the paddle almost in vertical, press your feet at the peddles, push knees up in the top.

From Thursday till Friday we went to Paradisbukta were our journey would start. During this trip my goal was to protect myself well enough for the sun and mosquitos. The area would have beaches with sand and stones and a lot of mosquitos and ticks. The whole trip the weather was perfect. Sun and not much wind.

The trip started at Paradisbukta. We putted our equipment in the kayaks. We needed to make sure that the weight was divided well. Once we did we got into the kayaks and started our journey. We got the task to navigate in pairs. The halve of the group would navigate and the other half would do it the next day. The whole trip was easy to paddle and the weather was beautiful. During the break we stopped at small island were there was a possibility to jump of a cliff and have a swim. We stayed there for a hour and a half which was amazing. After the break we continued our journey to the island were we would sleep. The island was called Hellroya. Samantha and I had the turn to navigate. We kayaked straight towards to point without much trouble , atleast we thought. I was hard to keep track of the distance towards the point. It was also pretty hard to keep the group together since a couple participants were slower then the rest. Once we arrived Maike, Joanna, jed and Samuel surprised us with cake and wine. After we had a chat Tom, Jed, Aaron, Samuel and me went to the big cliff. This cliff was more then 20 meters high so we decided to jump of it! Best decision of my life it gave me a fair share of adrenaline. After that we relaxed and went to bed. I slept on a rock near the water to avoid mosquitos. The next morning we left at about 10 am. We again had turns navigating. This time we didn’t really take a brake because we would be back at about 1 pm. During the trip back we didn’t struggle at all. I got a bit tired at the end but it didn’t cause any problems. Once we got back at Paradisbukta we unloaded the kayaks and ended the trip. I couldn’t really help collecting common gear because I had to run to the buss stop to catch the bus.

Even though these two day the weather was really good I found it hard to navigate in a coastal area. Mainly because I was sitting low in the water. This way I could barely guess distances and height of object or islands. Next to that I noticed that its hard communicate with the group whilst paddling and keeping the group together was also quite a challenge. I now know that when guiding a group on the sea you have to pay close attention all the time for the safety of the participants.

For this trip I brought light equipment and less food then I would bring to winter trip. I took for this trip.

Approach shoes

Climbing shoe’s (incase there were deep water solo possibilities)

Short

1 pair undies

1 pair socks

1 pair of trousers

Jumper

Hardshell jacket

Cap

Sun glasses

Sun screen

Mosquitospray

6 sandwiches

4 liters of water

Pot

Pasta (dinner)

Pesto (dinner)

Sleepingbag

Bivy bag with mosquito net

2 dry sacks

For trips I never struggle with food also on this trip I had enough food and water. The only thing that was different that I had to bring way more water then I normally would do. It was warm and there was no fresh water anywhere. Also I wish brought more snacks, because we had a lot of free time on the island. Snacks bring always a bit of luxury in the field. In the winter I would bring chocolate but now I didn’t because of the high temperatures Next to that I managed this trip to barely got burned. Only on the way back I got burned a bit. The mosquitos however were terrible. Even though I was protected well and avoided grass and other vegetation I still got stung by millions of bugs. It all ended when the wind picked up again. Next time I’m going to sleep in a massive mosquito net.

Another thing that I noticed was the movability of the kayak. I found harder to edge the kayak when I wanted to steer or turn because of all the extra weight I had in the kayak now. Next to that it was slightly more exhausting to paddle since there is more weight.

Blog assignment 6 Sea Kayak Field trip Location: Paradisbukta – Ny Hellesund For this fieldtrip we started at the first two days in Kristiansand were we did the preparations for this kayak trip.
