Basic Ski Course

…we were in proper mountains thanks to bad weather

Monday 8/2

9.25 – car is loaded. We are heading to Evje for Basic Ski course. Marek, Joey, Jonas and Martynas were in the car. Although we gave our stuff (skis, food, clothes) to Len the day before the car was overloaded. The journey wasn’t long – about one hour.

12.17 – unpacking at our cabin. I am in room with five other guys. It supposed to be the smelliest room and it actually turned out few hours later.

15.42 – sitting at gathering room with huge fireplace which was producing a lot of smoke but no warm. We are having lecture about clothing and equipment at winter mountain environment. It is very interesting one with lot of practical examples and teacher’s experience.

18.24 – cooking dinner. I was last in the queue for cooking. Everybody finished eating, I’ve just started.

Tuesday 9/2

8.21 – decision made. Snow conditions in Evje are very bad. We are driving to Bortelid skisenter.

9.04 – I am glad for bad weather down there. These are proper mountains. We are split up into two groups according to our height. Our skiing teacher is Tim Davis.

13.54 – back in the ski centre. We are having lunch. We made some basic skills in the morning and then just went for a small trip in a deep snow. It was quite difficult for some guys with no skiing experience but I and some other guys were trying to help them as much as possible.

18.25 – another lecture. Today’s topic is orienteering in the mountains.

Wednesday 10/2

13.15 – just “learned” how to do telemark turns. It is super-fun. Tim allowed me and Julian to use slope for trying these turns. Unfortunately, we found a kicker at the top of the slope. I have never jumped that high and far with cross-country skis. That was probably a little bit dangerous but very funny.

17.56 – lecture about avalanches. We were told how to avoid being in avalanche and how to behave when it happens.

20.32 – cross-country skating enthusiast. I drove by car to Gautestad. The tracks were perfectly prepared and snow was very fast. I really enjoyed skiing there.

Thursday 11/2

14.54 – back from all day trip around Bortelid skisenter. It was around 15 km long. Everybody was supposed to lead a group for about 2 km. Some of the guys weren’t able to keep the pace which was suitable for rest of the group. Especially guys with little skiing experience became super-fast when leading.

19.23 – entertaining evening. Every nation is supposed to present its country with some game or similar stuff. I chose Czech language course. The topic was “ordering a beer in the pub”.

Friday 12/2

10.11 – skiing in Gautestad. We are on the way to the camping spot. The weather is awesome.

12.45 – eating lunch and sunbathing. Everybody is having fun. Some of the guys are just lying on the mats, some of them are playing games, etc.

14.20 – just came back from my personal skating trip. Conditions were again awesome.

17.15 – back in the Krisitiansand. All the week was very nice. I’ve enjoyed it so much and what’s more important, I’ve learn much more about guys in our study group.
