On Monday 27 January we got our third daytrip. The trip was about map and compasses. We met up at the campsite at the university.
At first, we did some orienteering. We were divided into groups and I was in a group of four, with one Norwegian student and three internationals. We needed to go to point 8 on the map and then to 1 (in that order). It was easy to get there because we had been using the same map before in another lecture. And the points were also in an area where I had been before, so, it was familiar.
We had only one map in the group, it would have been better if we all got one, or at least two in a group. I enjoyed getting to know the Norwegian student and it was a good environment to getting to know each other, there was plenty of time.
We were finished early, luckily there was a fire at the campsite. After the lunchbreak we had a compass game. It was the first time I used a compass and it was new to me. I had hide the object for the other group, the other members of the group had decided about the degrees. After hiding the object, we had to search the object from another group. I was taking care of sending my groupmates in the right direction. The guys explained to me how I should work with the compass and after all the object was found! It was a good way to get introduced to the compass. We have only played the game once, but maybe we should have done it twice, to learn something more and to get used to the compass, because practice/repeating is everything!
At last we played a question game. There were questions about how to read coordination’s and where the north in a map is. You had to run to the table, get the bottle and then answer the question. We were in a big group and I just ran 1 out of 7 times. Sometimes because I didn’t know the answer to the question, but sometimes also because it was way to busy, everyone trying to grab the bottle. There were people in front of me, I didn’t even try sometimes… a good example of social loafing. I think they had to set a different setting for the game, so that the participation was higher from everyone.

At the location on the map, we had to take an original photo of something special at that point
