Grunnskolelærerutdanningen er en profesjonsutdanning. I læreryrket er man derfor opptatt av å utvikle en profesjonell kompetanse. Som en del av lærerens profesjonsutdanning må en lærer derfor være klar over at det stilles en rekke forventninger til ham/henne. I det ligger det en kombinasjon av handlingsdyktighet og innsikt i læreryrket. Blant annet forventes det at læreren holder seg faglig oppdatert ved hjelp av kurs/etterutdanning og samarbeid i team.
For at jeg skal fremstå som en profesjonell lærer er det viktig for meg å stille godt forberedt til timene, ha pedagogisk kompetanse, være rettferdig, vise omsorg og engasjement. Jeg må ha klare mål for undervisningsøktene, kunne skape et godt læringsmiljø og se den enkelte elev. Undervisningen må tilpasses ved bruk av varierte metoder og læringsstrategier. Det er viktig ha å ha fokus på læringsmålene når undervisningen planlegges og ha et godt samarbeid med hjemmene. Elevene må vurderes jevnlig og jeg må gi tydelige og profesjonelle tilbakemeldinger til elever og foreldre.Jeg må bidra aktivt i samarbeid i team og være en god kollega.
Som lærer har man stor påvirkning på oppveksten til elevene. Det er derfor viktig at man er seg dette bevisst og blir en tillittsperson som de føler seg trygg på. All læring bunner ut i trygghet og det er derfor viktig å etablere et tillitsforhold til elevene tidlig.
Som lærer er man et forbilde for elevene og derfor er det viktig at man tar hensyn til dette også i privatlivet.
