05.23.16 – Coastal Course

This was the best way to end the semester, with a bang! At first I was hesitant as I hadn’t really gotten to know the Norwegian class very well and we were all going to be split into 4 groups with Norwegians in them as well. Turns out I couldn’t have asked for a better group! We all had so much fun and got along very well. The first two activities were kayaking and the weather was really nice so I decided to forgo my waterproof jacket. It was really beautiful out and the wind wasn’t too bad. This made for some nice relaxed kayaking around the islands and we all got to talk and chat while doing so which made it more fun. The second time we went kayaking we went out to one of the light houses and were able to tour inside of it. It was very homey and you could be rent a bed for the night if you needed to.

Our next 2 activities were shallow and deep water biology which was really fun as well. For the shallow water biology we went around with small nets and we could wear these water gaiters to stay dry in up to our waists. It turns out I found the most rare creature, which the biologist had only seen once in his life before. I wish I had taken a picture of it. It was about as wide as the tip of my pinky finger and really flat, it looked like a mini plant-octopus. But it was pretty cool :) I also found something that he had never seen before and so we had to look it up and it was wicked cool. It was an orange gummy type thing that had 2 thick tentacle like things come out of a pod hanging on the seaweed and its little suckers were searching for food. It was a bright orange color so it was pretty cool to watch. Deep water was enjoyable as well, but what wasn’t enjoyable was trying to get into a wet, wet suit. It took forever and hurt the tips of my fingers but I was definitely warm. I hated how water kept getting into my snorkel when we went snorkeling but I still had fun, it was pretty just to look at the seaweed and fish swimming around.

After that it was time for our stranded overnight trip on a barren island with just our small day pack. Lucky for us the weather was bad, it was pretty windy and too dangerous to go to the furthest island where everyone had to go, so we got to go to one closer that had trees on it! The other island was all rock and only had small bushes so we were fortunate that ours was a lot bigger and we had a lot more resources. I found the coolest place to sleep ever, it was between two rocks and the trees in between formed a hollow and it was big enough for all 10 of us to sleep there. Saedis and I cleared the area and got 3 bins of firewood from it while the others broke off in search of fire wood and food.

We ended up catching 9 fish and I was surprised they were so successful without using any bait, but I guess things are different when fishing in the ocean. Karoline taught me how to gut and cut the fish which I thought was really awesome, I had always wanted to know how. The whole time I let one of the guys play music off of my bluetooth speaker that I brought and he had really good music, so everyone was having a blast. It stayed light out till about 11 and it was warm enough that all afternoon and evening we just sat on the rocks together, basking in the sun. It was really cold at night because we didn’t have any sleeping bags or blankets, but I was glad that Amy let me borrow her big jacket for the trip, it really helped. Even though I only got about 1.5 hours of sleep, the whole experience was really enjoyable.

In the morning we went and picked up the nets we set out the night before and our first activity was teaching us about the different fish and how to cut and cook them. By the end of the activity I had gotten pretty decent at filleting cod, but the places fish were really flat and hard to get any meat off of. We went back up and cooked a communal lunch of fish and chips and fish soup. We had a row boating session after that and learned how to properly use one. I must say, they are a bit of a pain in the ass. I don’t like going backwards, it’s annoying to always have to check over your shoulder and see where you were going. That night a couple of us went to the end of the island to just hang out and party a bit and it was a lot of fun. Good music and good company, it made for a great final night. We rode and learned how to drive a motorboat on our final day.

I had tons of fun on this trip and learned a bunch about what we can eat and how to prepare it, also different ways to fish and how to use different boats.  I really bonded well with everyone in our group on the overnight island stay and am sad that the semester is already over :( hopefully we’ll all be able to keep in touch!
