Hello again,
unfortunately I was not able to go with the others to the planned kindergarten observations. Therefore I had to organize my own which was actually not a big deal. I have just explained my situation and why I need to find out something about the play of Norwegian children in kindergartens. Afterwards the staff agreed to answer all my questions and give me a impression of the children’s play. My main focus was on the following questions:
1. Are the children allowed to use any kind of dangerous tools?
The children are allowed to use tools like knifes, saws and hammers but only in group work and after the instruction and under the observation of the staff.
2. How often and how long do the children usually play outside?
The children spend every day outside even if the weather is bad. However they also play inside and the time spent outside depends on the group and the day’s program.
3. In which kind of area are they playing?
The children of this kindergarden have usually two main playgrounds.
As you can see in the picture the first one is just around the main building and includes classical elements like tunnels, a sand pit, a swing, dens and different climbing possiblities. In addition to that you can find natural elements like trees and bolders.
The second playground is a natural area next the the kindergarten and different playing elements are added between rocks and trees.
The second picture shows some benches with a fire spot in the middle. They are used for breaks, group works and for making fire. Interesting is also that very dangerous places like the little pond is fenced to make sure that the children cannot reach it or fall in.
4. How are they taught?
The staff explained me that they would only restrict the children if they are bringing themselves in really dangerous situations. Sometimes they just guide a little and let them play again. It is also important to them that the children learn to solve problems and to overcome resitance on their own.
5. How important is outdoor and risky play?
They told me that it is so important to them because of two aspects. Firstly the child’s development. They have to learn to identify risks and make decisions on their own. Secondly the social aspect. The children should play together and experience together in order to learn how to work in a team.
