This week it was time for us to show that we could be in charge and be leaders for three different groups of students that were graduating.

Monday
Everyone got together at Spicheren to collect some equipment for the different activities we would be organising this week. We were all very happy since there was sun and nice weather and we were optimistic that our week would be the same. Everyone was in charge of different activities and therefore responsible for bringing the different equipment with the week. Stella and I were in charge of the lava game, where the ground was lava and the group had to work together to get across without touching the ground carrying a bucket of water and completing a few tasks. We had to walk a little while to the place where we set up our camp up the hill. Our “camp” was basically just putting our bags down, rolling out our mats and sleeping bags and sleeping where they landed. It was great, just laying on the ground with the open air above you!
First we set up our stuff and then we had time to do what we wanted until the first group got there. When the first group got there I had butterflies in my stomach of excitement, me and Stella started our activity and quickly found out that it was way to of a short program. We thought to prolong the explanation by telling a strange and funny story. Usually it started that they were no longer student but scientists that had found this island that me and Stella ruled over, we had a fountain of youth water that they had just stolen to make experiments with. In anger me and Stella released our half spider half monkey animals on them and they had to cross our lava river to get to their boats. Then we would go over the rules and the goal. But they were so good at working together that me and Stella had to spent the evening trying to make it more complicated so they would take a longer time. We had them loose arms or legs, we were very stern in making them go back if they fell. In the end they had to cross three times because they forgot a paddle and then again to get to the boats, one person got blind because of allergic reaction from the lave. That got them using more time in completing the task. They could also get extra points for singing an eminem song which was a lot of fun to listen and watch. There were different types in every group but for the most part I think they all enjoyed themselves and had a fun time at our station.

The night was awesome, we had some games with the kids around the campfire, threw the volleyball around and I taught them a weird Icelandic football game and then a nice sleep out in the open.

Tuesday
Woke up after a really good sleep. Then back to work, we started to morning the same as last evening. Then we had a big break in between groups where we could do what we wanted, some when to the beach, some on a canoe trip, home for a shower, a hike around or just taking a nap. Then back to business with the new group, then me and Stella went on to the next activity that we were in charge of which was canoeing! We had to explain to them the basic canoe technique, how to hold a paddle, what the most effective paddle technique is, how to turn and go in a circle. Then it was off for a try around the closest island, where we demonstrated what we were talking about and then showing them the slalom course in the lake. Then they had a race between themselves going the slalom, then around the island to a water bottle where they had to turn the canoe around and paddle backwards towards the shore. Then if there was left over time they had some free time to paddle as they wanted. This was a lot of fun because the sun was nice and me and Stella just had a nice canoe time while we watched them on the lake.

Wednesday
We weren’t very lucky with the weather this time canoeing with a bit of wind and we had to change the program a little bit. Less of the explanations were done on the water since they weren’t focusing on us but trying to keep themselves from drifting away. So we just did the explanations on land and then moved to the water.
During the break I went on a hike up to a viewpoint so I could see what the area looked like from above. It was a nice hike and I could just sit down on my own and enjoy the view and the view was beautiful.
Then after the break it was time for the next group, then it was time for me and Stella to move on to the blind-course. This was a bit of a challenge since we weren’t involved as much as the other two activities. We had to explain and then watch as they completed the task. It was hilarious watching them lead each other using different techniques. They were paired two and two where one of the had a blindfold, and the other had to either lead them by touch, voice, both and from a distance through an obstacle course. They had to step over a rope, crawl under a tarp, do a limbo, hang up laundry and go around a tree then walk back. It was interesting watching the different groups and how they dealt with being blindfolded and trusting each other. They seemed to be having a lot of fun and they kept laughing when they were performing so I take that as a good sign. The evening was spent like the other nights, with us at the campfire, laughing, smiling and sharing stories. We all had a lot of fun together just enjoying each others company.

Thursday
We woke for our last day, and that was the night the flies decided to attack me and eat me. Me and Stella had to finish our part at the blind obstacle course and it was very nice finish. The kids we had today were great, me and Stella made it a point to introduce ourselves to every group and have them introduce themselves as well then we asked them about their plans for after they graduate and how their school experience has been so we had a lot of fun with them. They also surprised us, for example in one group we had heard that some of the kids were not very motivated and then in our group they were very motivated. After cleaning the area, and packing our packs we had a little talk about the trip and what went right and what went wrong which was nice. Overall it was a fantastic trip and I had a great time with the kids and with the rest of the class. I enjoyed that it was us all in one big group and for once there was not a difference between our skills and strengths. We were all equals and had fun together it wasn’t a very stressful trip so we could enjoy ourselves so much more.
