Sitting here writing blogs for school on the third to last week here in Kristiansand and I realize one, its a great feeling to be caught up with school work and two that I haven’t done any personal blogging.
Since my first post there has been many adventures. For class we have been traveling almost every week. We have gave up on winter activities (Thankfully) and moved on to summer ones. At the end of the winter I started to get a little adjusted to the cold but my skiing skills never got past sub-par. Now that it is warm out we have learned climbing and canoeing techniques. So far this part of the semester has been my favorite.
March was one of the busiest months of my life. It started when my instructor broke his ankle, giving us almost the whole month off. When Abby, Frankie and I heard the news we immediately started to plan a trip out of the country. We decided Copenhagen was the best opportunity for the time and money that we had available. Two days after getting back from a class trip we took off on a bus to Oslo, Norway. From Oslo we caught a plane to Copenhagen. Staying in the biggest hostel in Europe, we had amazing views and a great location. Almost everything was within walking distance. The first day we went to some historical buildings and just explored the city. The second day we bought a Copenhagen card, this card got us into a lot of the main places around the city. We took advantage of it, we went to a couple castles, the aquarium, the Carslburg beer museum and even a botanical garden. The next and last day was my favorite. We started off with a coffee and a boat ride. The boat took us to the other side of the city that we had yet to explore. Within this part of the city there is a small community call Free Town. The laws in Free town are a bit different than the rest of the country. It has an open cannabis trade. There were stands with product all down the street. Everything was colored with street art, there were bars, cafes and restaurants in this area where people would just hang out. I wish we could have stayed in this are a bit longer because the atmosphere was so great but went home early that night to catch our early morning flight.
I was not in Krstiansand long before I took off for my next adventure. Although I did make time to visit my long time friend from Nebraska who was also visiting Norway. She was staying in a city about 30 minutes away studying nursing. We didn’t get to spend as much time together as I would have liked too but just catching up with a friend for a bit feels great.
I was home about three days before heading back to Olso to catch my flight to London, England. London was a fun time. We started off the adventure by getting lost in the underground railway system. After several attempts we made it to the main part of the city, we explored a bit then went to another side of town, Camden park. During the evenings Camden has a great variety of food. There was food trucks around every corner and little desert and clothing shops in the buildings surrounding the area. After some drinks we had a fun night out at a little club playing throw back music from the generation I grew up in. The next day we took a hour train ride to the beach city, Brighton. Too hungover from the night before, we didnt end up doing too much here. Abby and Brad went out for some drinks after we went to a buffet and we explored the city a bit. The next morning we went to the pier to see all the games and ride. We choose a very bad time to visit this city because for the first time in years there was snow on the ground. No one was at the beach or on the pier playing. We made out way back to the big city of London.
Abby and I set off on the double Decker buses to the sightseeing spots. Of course we got lost along the way but we ended up making it to the London tower, the London bridge, the London experience (historical haunted house), and the shard tower. Along the way to these sights we saw Big ben being undersonstruction, the eye, and Westminster Abbey. Not seeing nearly as much as we wanted too it felt like leaving the next day would be too soon. We had no choice but to get on our flight home because our next trip was just around the corner.
Having two day to prepare I was off on another adventure with my friends. Maike, Jo, Jed, and I took off driving to oslo, caught a flight to Bodo, Norway, then from there we got on a ferry at one in the morning to get to the famous Lofoten islands. The four of us rented a car to get from place to place. There was none stop breath taking views. We were on the islands for six days but it did not feel like enough. I would love to visit this area again during the summer time to experience the different seasons. During the season we went the nothern lights were in full force. We were lucky enough to see them four of our nights there. In other seasons, such as summer, the mid night sun is out all day and night. This trip had a lot of unexpected challenges but I think all of the challenges we got through together made the trip so legendary.
Since Getting back from the Lofoten islands I have had a some weeks that I’ve been on school trips, I’ve learned how to properly rock climb, done some BBQing, attempted to learn fly fishing, lots of time blogging, relaxing on the beach and even had my first date with what is now my boyfriend. I’ve enjoyed having a couple weeks I’ve had to relax and work on school work but the work never seems to end. As soon as I get caught up on blogging we have three weeks of trips in a row that I then have to blog about. Although I shouldn’t be complaining because this is one of the best semesters of my life. Norway has been treating me too good, some times it doesn’t seem real. During my time here I have created a second family with my classmates. Thinking about leaving them and this beautiful country I have been calling home these last five months sounds like torture but the last few weeks feel like they are flying by.
My final exam is on the 12th of June. Then I will be starting a six day hike the next day, checking off multiple things on my Norwegian bucket list. Saying goodbye to Norway one last time on the 20th of June I fly out of Stavanger to the Netherlands. I will then be adventuring around the country for another month. Staying at my boyfriend, Marjins, I will be meeting up with a handful of people from my class to explore. I cant wait for the upcoming month but I wouldn’t be mad if time slowed down a bit.
