The trip took place near Kristiansand, in Skråstadheia.
One of the aims of this trip was the self organization. We were nine people to decide where we want to go, what we want to do… Finally we decided that we want some place where we can go by walk to do some hiking, improve our fire techniques, team building, etc. When you have to do a trip with other people you should be patience, honest, and be happy with the final decision. If everybody in the team is happy, this will be a success. I’m completely sure. Our trip was!
We walked around 2 or 3 hours and finally we decided to camp near the lake. The last path was a little bit difficult because there was some snow and some of our foot went into the river. L My right foot was completely wet; I had a lake inside my boot.
What’s about the weather? You must check the forecast before you go somewhere, and even more if you are going to sleep and stay 3 days outside around nature. These days the weather was so awesome! Three sunny days 🙂 I think they were our first days with sun since we arrive in Norway. So.. you can imagine, we were very very happy.
I loved so much this time. Ready to do again!
Main learning focus day by day: Short description of our planned learning outcomes:
On this trip the learning objectives we set was the creative kitchen on fire, introduction to fishing, to develop counseling skills and welfare during the tour. To achieve these objectives, we chose a short trip close to Kristiansand where we would put the base camp. Moreover, in this post I will say little about the food and nutrition when you go on a trip. As for achieving the goals we have set for the trip is still important that we have the technical skills necessary for the objectives can be achieved. When we planned everything to cook at the fire, it is important that we can actually feed a fire in the conditions we found.
- Tuesday 11th of March
– Navigation skills → bearings, under bearing, looking navigation points, cross bearing.
The first thing that you have to before go on a trip is be sure that you have all the stuff that you need. We took one tipi, two storm kitchen, saws, gas bottles, first aid kid, walking sticks.. All the necessary for this kind of trip. We also bought a lot of food (we were nine people and we were there 3 days so we needed a lot). When you are outside is better have more food than usual; you never know what can happen. Also you have to divide the rucksack weight between all the people in the group.
Map in hand and with everything pack, you are ready to go!
It’s nice if you divide the responsibilities between the people in the group. ALl of us worked as a guide for a while. When you are on route you can follow the map and here, in NOrway, also the DNT signals.
Each one of us was uncharged to cook a meal. The first day was our turn: Spanish girl cooking Spanish food J we cooked Spanish omelet and it was a success. They liked a lot.
After lunch we continued walking and finally we camp in a nice area near the lake where we can take the water for drink, cook and so on, with a lot of wood for the fire, place to put out the tipi…
Some of us recollect the wood for the fire; others put out the tarp (some of us decided to sleep outside under the tarp, vivac) and the tipi (others slept inside the tipi). We worked like a team. (Together Everyone Achieve More)
We had all the stuff that we needed so we did well the job. Everything was with us.
2. Wednesday 12th of March
– Camplife → Natural shelter building, fly-fishing, wildlife observation, making firebow, use of firesteel, making feather sticks, baking bread.
When you are comfortable with the people, with the place and in harmony with the nature nothing can go in a bad way.
One point: decide between your mates how is going to be the day. What aims do you want to achieve, what are we going to cook and what do we need for it, etc.
It’s nice to share with all of you: we made handmade wood spoons.
Cleaning up a camp
Natural navigation
Woodcarving
Group night
The people how know how to enjoy the nature, feel the freedom, respect the environment, also want to preserve it. For that it’s very important that when you leave some place, this one be in the same conditions than you found it. Take all your rubbish with you! Keep clean the nature!
4. Friday 14th of March
Return hike
General goals:
Constructing natural shelters, get to know the area better, get to know one another, improve fitness, develop a stronger connection with the environment.
In this blog page I want to deepen a little bit in nutrition.
Food of sufficient quality and quantity will help to maintain the motivation to complete an expedition and enjoy it, whilst reducing the risk of injury and fatigue.
Food provides the body with the energy and nutrients necessary to keep it alive and healthy. Extra energy has to be taken from food to meet the demands of exercise. In addition to energy, primarily provided by cargo and fat, the body also requires protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. There are several factors which have to be considered when planning the food provision for a trip. These include the age, sex and number of members in the party, the terrain and environmental conditions likely to be experienced, shopping availability, type of accommodation and the duration of the expedition.
Food selection and menu planning.
Planning for adequate nutritional intake improves your ability to operate safely in the hills and mountains and decreases the risk of injury and fatigue. The requirements for expedition food are not the same as those of a healthy, balanced and varied day to day diet. It is generally accepted that 1 kg of food per person per day is a reasonable allowance on expedition. Consequently, careful planning is required to ensure that the quality and quantity of food taken will meet the energy demands of the group, and individuals within it. In general there are three categories of expedition food provision to consider:
- Camp food: usually breakfast and evening meals which provida the opportunity to prepare hot food and drinks.
- Trail food- be consumed on the move
- Emergency food- be consumed during delays and unexpected incidents
- energy dense
- lightweight
- varied and appetising
- easly prepared
- durable
