Assignment 6 – Holmenkollen Ski Festival

Before we went to the ski festival went to the Fram museum and learnt about Nansen and Amondson’s expeditions to the North Pole. It was really impressive that they managed to stay on that boat, locked in the ice, for such a long time.

What surprised me most about the Holmenkollen Ski festival was just how big it was. When we went for a walk around the track and the area where everyone was camping we saw just how much equipment they had brought just for a weekend! They had massive tents, wood burning stoves, chairs, sofas and tables. They do not mess around. It was clear that this was a very important weekend for the people there. In the evening there were massive parties all over the area and everyone had a really good time.

During the day we watched all the races and I was really impressed at how good the skiers were and how far they skied in such a short amount of time. However the ski jumping was the most impressive of all. We managed to sit on the side of the jump and it was massive! The ski museum was very interesting also as in Britain we don’t have much skiing.

All in all it was a great insight into Norwegian culture and the history of skiing.
