Randoya coastal course

We met up around 10 oclock at Kongshavn waiting for the boat to take us to Randoya, when we arrived we moved in our dorms and had some time for lunch, fishing and frisbee etc. Our first activity was Shallow water biology where whe got waterproof suits and boots to walk around in the shallow water and have a look at the plants and animals around there. Afterwards we colcted the things we found and tried to figure out what was what. Then we ate some snails and went back. After dinner we had a tour around the Island seeing some cool bunkers from the WWII.

In the morning we had deep water biology, we went snorkling in the bay, luckily the wetsuits where very good since the water was not very warm. We saw cool fishes, lots of jelllyfish, starfish and cool algue’s. The snorkling was pretty hard to breath normally and I swallowed alot of water. After lunch we took some stuff hopped in the rowing boats, set out the fishing nets and “stranded on an island” we had to survive the night with just some basic gear for a daytrip. We worked well together, some where making the shelter while others fished for dinner and some took care of the fire. We stayed by at the fire quite long and had loads of fish, after a few cold hours in the shelter we went to the fire again around 5. And soon we where taking in the fishing net with 4 nice flatfish. We rowed back to civilazation took a nap, had some breakfast and our fish filling workshop. That went quite well, although it was quite difficult in the beginning. The rest of the day was really chilled, just on the motorboat touring around the area fishing about every now and then. In the evening we played some frisbee.

Next morning we hopped in the rowboats again for some fun games and competitons, after that we went for a tour, had a break on the beach and back to the island. In the afternoon we went for a small kayak trip with some basic excercizes. Such as a deep water rescue because Moritz capsized obviously. The week was coming to and end and we spent the night playing some card games with the Norwegians.

On the last day the weather was kind off shitty. We paddled around in the kayaks in the rain for a bit, but the sea was quite wild. So we went into the skippersgate and paddled back to Kongshavn. There we put the kayaks on the trailer and got picked up by motorboat. As we where a bit delayed alot of the cleaning was already done. So we did some final touches packed our stuff and went home.

Group dynamics

It was nice to finally get in touch a bit more with the Norwegian students, since I missed the Holmenkollen trip. I think our group was still a bit seperate here and there but I tried to mix it up a bit spending time with some of the Norwegians. There was still of alot of Norwegian speaking during the week even by the lecturers wich was quite annoying but also understandable. The Island on the night was pretty good teamwork, I was impressed as I saw everybody working hard to have at least a bit of a comfy night.
