Third hike, 27th January

Schedule for the day: maps and compass

Improving our orientiering skills

This time, we were supposed to improve our orientiering skills and map-reading skills while hiking in groups of 4 consisting of two norwegian students and two international students. We were given the task to find two specific places, marked on the map, take a picture there and draw in the way we chose to get there. Making our way through the forest of Jegersberg we had some troubles finding the right way as we needed to step off the big path. Even though we chose ethe correct way eventually, it took us a while to figure out which way to go, which might have been caused by having only one map, so that it was difficult for everyone to realize where we are at the same time and maybe because of some restraining behavior by everyone in making a decision. In the end, we usually agreed to a proposal of someone and we passed the map around so everyone could lead a short section of the way, which worked out pretty well and solved our problem of only one map. Additionally it was a pretty good excersie to guide others and thereby the leading person took responsibility, the others just helped out in case it was needed. As it’s only been quite short sections it worked out very well in the end.
