The Abtah case:
4.4 m for five years in prison

By Ole Johansen

Majed El Abtah and his family have been awarded a total of NOK 4.4 m compensatory damages and redress by Borgarting Court of Appeal. In August 1992, Abtah, who is the father of four children, was wrongly sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for complicity in a heroin case.

After five years in prison, he was acquitted in November 1996, thanks to persistent efforts by his defence counsel, Mr Svein Duesund, and Anders Bratholm, law professor.
