Assignment 6

Self- organised trip: Trolltunga

  • When: 05 – 15.05.2021
  • Where: Odda/Hardangerfjord
  • What: 3 days camping trip and hike to Trolltunga
  • 3 words, that describe the experience the best: snow, glacier river, tranquillity
  • My Orange (best moment): dipping my feet in the cold glacier river after a warm and long night
  • My Lemon (worst moment): the cold wind and snow on the hike and the expensive parking ticket (500kr for a day (to just see a rock))
  • What I want to improve on: living in the moment

We left Kristiansand around 2pm and drove 5 hours to the upper parking spot of Trolltunga. I loved to just look out of the window and see the nature changing into snowy mountains. It’s crazy that this road feels already familiar to me and I’m always excited when we pass by our accommodation from the Hovden trip (so many good memories).

It’s forbidden to camp in the areas around the parking spot of Trolltunga, thus we drove to the next lake and camped there. We already prepared dinner at home and warmed up our wraps on the Trangia. Life is so easy when you’re prepared well. In the night it didn’t get totally dark (Welcome midnight sun!).

We started our hike to Trolltunga (in total: 30km) at 8am. Anna, Elli and me carried our big backpack packed with everthing for a night out because we wanted to practise and try out our gear for the 11 days hike on the Lofoten in summer. After the first 5km the path started to get snowy, but luckily we brought our gaters 😊.

The view on Trolltunga, 1000m down and over the lake is pretty nice but I couldn’t really enjoy it because I saw it too often in the internet and don’t like the fact that thousand of people walk up to take a photo for Instagram (and the tourism takes advantage of it).

On the way down the sun came out and we met 5 friends from our program, who planned to sleep on Trolltunga. We fell asleep at a sunny spot next to a river and finally arrived back at the car around 7pm. We could definitely feel our legs after this day, but I was surprised how easy it felt to carry the big backpack.

We drove to Odda, bought groceries, and found a wonderful camping spot next to the river with a view on the Buarbreen glacier. I still can’t believe how warm the nights were, even too hot for our good sleeping bags! The next morning was the most relaxed camping day we ever had because we were not in a hurry and nothing was planned (our hiking shoes were totally wet anyways). We ate breakfast next to the river and took a sunbath till we decided to end our little holiday trip with having lunch in a restaurant in Odda. We had yummy Pizza and on our way home we saw a moose which passed the street. So amazing, so norwegian! When we arrived at home the apartment was full of friends and it felt so nice to be back home and be a part of this wonderful community!
